Wait, Did The Crow Remake Make Its Main Villain Supernatural?

Summary

The Crow remake adds a supernatural element to the main villain, hinting at his strange abilities.
The supernatural twist makes the main villain less scary compared to the 1994 version, forfeiting believability.
The revamped Crow delves into changes in Eric and Shelly’s relationship and amplifies the resurrection and revenge mission.

The first trailer for the remake of The Crow shows what Eric’s mission will look like and who he will face on his return from the dead, but this new version seems to have made the villain supernatural. Despite the 1994 film version of James O’Barr’s comic book series The Crow being a cult classic, it has now gotten the remake treatment with Rupert Sanders as director and Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven. The Crow remake has faced controversy since its announcement, and it continues to do so thanks to the changes it made to the 1994 version.

The Crow remake takes the same premise as the 1994 adaptation but with some notable changes, many of which were revealed in the first trailer. The Crow follows Eric Draven and his fiancée Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs), who are brutally murdered in their home. Some time after their deaths, Eric is brought back to life to avenge his and Shelly’s deaths, setting out on a violent revenge mission against their murderers and their boss. The one supernatural element in The Crow is Eric’s resurrection, but the remake seems to have added another one through its main villain.

The Crow Trailer Hints At Danny Huston’s Villain Being Supernatural

The Crow 2024 Danny Huston as the main villain

In the trailer, there’s a close-up of Danny Huston’s character with his eyes looking very strange.

The first trailer for The Crow remake shows various changes to Eric and Shelly’s relationship, their murderers, and the terms of Eric’s resurrection and revenge mission. In this version of The Crow, there’s a direct connection between Eric and Shelly and their murderers, as Shelly tells Eric that she “saw things she shouldn’t have seen”, as the trailer shows Danny Huston’s still unnamed villain. According to the trailer, Shelly witnessed Huston’s character and his people torture a young woman, which turned her and Eric into their next targets.

In that scene, there’s a close-up of Huston’s character with his eyes looking very strange as he seems to be absorbing the girl’s energy or something similar. This is followed by Huston’s villain whispering something into the young woman’s ear as she’s in some painful trance. These details hint at the main villain in The Crow remake having some sort of supernatural ability, though it’s to be seen what exactly it is, what he takes from his victims and why, and how this could affect his confrontation with a resurrected Eric.

The Crow Remake’s Villain Being Supernatural Makes Him Less Scary

The Crow 1994 Top Dollar

What made Top Dollar and his crew so scary in the 1994 adaptation of
The Crow
was that they were believable bad guys who could be found in a crime-ridden city.

The main villain in the 1994 version of The Crow had no supernatural abilities of any kind. In it, the main villain was Top Dollar (Michael Wincott), a crime boss who intended to seize the apartment building where Shelly and Eric lived, an action that Shelly and David actively protested against. Brandon Lee’s Eric killed Top Dollar’s henchmen first and saved him for last, and he proved to be a very tough opponent, but he was ultimately killed by Eric.

In the comic book series, the leader of the gang was T-Bird, while Top Dollar was a low-level drug dealer.

What made Top Dollar and his crew so scary in the 1994 adaptation of The Crow was that they were believable bad guys who could be found in a crime-ridden city and who posed a real threat to the community. Making the main villain supernatural in The Crow remake takes this away and also makes Eric’s return less special as it’s no longer the only supernatural element in the story. It’s to be seen how exactly The Crow changed the main villain and how it will handle this new version, as well as what his weaknesses will be.
